Start writing fiction! 〰️

Do you want to write fiction, but don’t know where to begin?

We know. Starting to write can be intimidating. Perhaps you love to read stories and have come up with a few ideas for stories you’d like to write, but whenever you sit down with a notebook or in front of a computer to write, you freeze. What’s a good beginning? How does plot work? Can I create believable characters out of thin air?

Hell, where do I start?

Learn the basics of writing fiction with Honing House!

Whether you intend to write short fiction or a novel, this online seven-week course will teach you the basic components you need to write compelling fiction. Classes take place over Zoom every Tuesday evening from 19:00 to 20:30 CEST. Enrollment is capped at 15 so that each student has the opportunity to ask questions and receive personal attention.

The whole seven week course is just €300!

Course overview

Each week, the class will meet over Zoom to cover a different aspect of fiction writing. Here is what to expect week-to-week from the course.

Week 1: What is fiction anyway?

Learn about genre writing, writing for an audience, how fiction writers read, and more in this engaging introductory class.

Week 2: Finding material and turning it into fiction

Gain tactics for turning real-life incidents into fictional events, and learn methods for becoming a more observational artist.

Week 3: Inciting incidents and common story shapes

Learn how to hook your reader with compelling openings and discover some of the most common plot shapes to guide you as you write.

Week 4: Creating characters and conflict

All stories need compelling characters and gripping conflict. This lesson will help you develop both.

Week 5: Basics of perspective

In this class, you’ll learn about the many variations of first, second, and third- person perspectives (and learn a few things about tense to boot).

Week 6: Creating compelling details

Learn how to create realistic settings, develop mood, and weave complex textures into your writing.

Week 7: Tactics for writing and revising your story

They say half of writing is revision. This class will teach you tactics for getting through the first draft of your story and provide exercises for revision.
