Everyone can be a writer

But knowing how to take part in the writing life can sometimes feel overwhelming. Texts on writing theory can be wordy, frustrating, and confusing.

The blank page also offers its own challenges. Not knowing where to start can be scary! And setting writing goals? Tricky as well.

But if course, knowing where to go once you've started writing can be even more difficult.

Writing classes are not for everyone. Perhaps you have a beginner's cold feet? Or maybe you're returning to writing after a long break and feel a beginner's class won't give you what you need.

If this sounds like you, face-to-face writing coaching is exactly what you need.

Your Creative Writing Coach

Hi, I'm Daniel J. Cecil. I'm a writer and professional writing coach living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

I have an MFA in fiction writing from the University of Washington. There, I taught in the creative writing program for five years. Currently, I teach travel writing at Emerson College in Limburg.

My writing has appeared in many literary journals and magazines. Some highlights include work in The Rumpus, The Heavy Feather Review, The LA Review of Books, and Barrelhouse.

My first novel was on the long list for the Dzanc Fiction Prize and shortlisted for the Yes Yes Books Open Reading Period. My short fiction received a Pushcart nomination, as well as the support of several residencies.

FAQs

What's your teaching style?

With over ten years experience as a teacher and coach, I know how to work with writers. I love working with authors as they take their first steps, or try their hand at book writing.

I'm not a prescriptivist, and do not believe there is only one way to write. I love a variety of literature, from poetry to hard boiled thrillers.

My teaching style depends on the student. I listen to each one's writing goals and develop a plan according to their needs. Usually, this includes sharing readings, creating exercises for weak points, and helping a writer listen to their own voice.

But "help" might also mean developing a pitch with the writer, or helping doctor a long-stalled manuscript.

I want my teaching to feel as unique as your ambition. But if I were to boil down my teaching style into three words? They would be open, adaptive, and encouraging.
