Your first story (Online class) €200 — 15 Seats available

Have you always wanted to write a story, but never knew where to start? Or are you a writer who’s started many stories but never known how to finish? Or are you an artist from another discipline who wants to give the short story form the good old college try?

If so, this is the class for you.

In this intensive, four-week course, we’ll look at the nuts and bolts of writing. While one focus will be discovering what the essential components of a short story might be, we’ll also explore the essential components of the story you wish to write through exercises that will get you thinking about the reasons behind your desire to put your thoughts down on paper, and what it is you really want your stories to say.

Course takeaways:

  • You’ll have an opportunity to read examples of great writing and practice various aspects of the writing craft. This will include exercises in plotting, form, shape, sentence variation, sounds, perspective shifts, and more.

  • You’ll generate new work with the help of writing prompts and short, at-home assignments.

  • A greater understanding of your influences, the reasons why you wish to write, and how to express yourself through the act of writing.

  • Enthusiastic, in-depth feedback of your work that takes your approach to writing seriously.

Expectations:

Being a good writer starts with reading. We’ll do some of that. We’ll look at essays on craft as well as exemplary short (mostly very short) stories from a variety of voices.

Short, generative assignments will be provided each week to help you create a body of work. Eventually, these muscle building activities will lead to the composition of your own short story.

It’s going to be a hell of a lot of fun.

This class is suitable for writers at any level.

Classes will be held via Google Meet. Instructions will be emailed to participants ahead of the first class.
